This course covers the history of the western world, or what is called Western Civilization, and hence provides a foundation for European history. HIS 101 begins with the earliest human activity and goes through the Reformation era of the sixteenth century, covering the following topics: early civilizations; ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; the rise of Christianity and Europe after the decline of the Roman Empire; the Middle Ages; Western interaction with the non-West; the Renaissance; and the Reformation. Political, economic, cultural and social developments will be explored.
